How to tell if oil is hot enough for frying.

The other night when I made my Sesame chicken, I ran into a slight problem. (I don't have a fry daddy, but I am thinking it would be a very useful thing to have.) I was heating the oil in my frying pan and realized that I didn't know how to tell when the oil would be hot enough. I do have a thermometer, but it only goes up to about 250 degrees and I needed my oil to reach 375.

I quickly did some searching and found these tips on Top Tips For Girls.

1.)Very carefully flick some water into the oil, if it sizzles immediately, it's ready.

2.)Place cube of bread in the oil. When it sizzles, it's ready.

3.)Put a popcorn kernel in the oil. When it pops, the oil is between 350 and 365.

4.)Place the end of a wooden spoon in the oil. When the bubbles surround it, it's ready. The more bubbles, the better/hotter the oil. Just remember to only use wooden spoon, plastic could melt.

I opted for the water test. I don't think my oil was quite yet hot enough. It took longer to fry my chicken. Also keep in mind when you add whatever you're frying into the oil it will drop the temperature at least 25 degrees.

I just thought I would share this information with everyone. And this way I won't have to search for answers the next time I fry anything.

THANK YOU! I have been searching forever for this information. I'm pan-frying some chicken tonight for the first time (crosses fingers,) and I realized I don't have a themometer to tell if the oil was ready or not. You're a lifesaver! - Jenne
